Volkswagen Tayron R-Line Review: The Sportiest 7-Seater SUV India Has Been Waiting For?
Seven-seater SUVs in India have traditionally focused on size, comfort and road presence. Performance has almost always taken a back seat. But the Tayron R-Line changes that narrative in a big way. As Volkswagen’s flagship SUV for the Indian market, the Tayron doesn’t just aim to carry families in comfort — it also promises genuine driving excitement.
After experiencing it on the roads around Jaisalmer, it’s clear that the Tayron R-Line is trying to carve out a completely new space in the premium SUV segment.
Bold, Premium and Sporty Design
The Tayron R-Line immediately stands out with its muscular proportions and exclusive sporty detailing. The silhouette feels properly premium, with clean surfacing and a strong road presence that puts it firmly in full-size SUV territory.
Up front, the IQ.LIGHTS HD Matrix LED headlights with dynamic cornering function not only look futuristic but also offer excellent visibility. Adding to the drama are the illuminated Volkswagen logos at both the front and rear — a subtle touch that makes the Tayron feel special at night.
On the sides sit striking 19-inch diamond-cut Coventry alloy wheels, while the rear gets LED combination lamps with variable lighting functions for a modern signature look. Overall, the R-Line enhancements give the Tayron a sporty edge without making it look overstyled — something Volkswagen has always done well.
A Truly Premium Digital Cabin
Step inside and the Tayron’s interior instantly feels like a leap forward for Volkswagen in India. The dashboard is dominated by a massive 15-inch floating touchscreen infotainment system, which becomes the focal point of the cabin. Complementing it is 30-colour ambient lighting flowing across the dashboard and doors, creating a lounge-like atmosphere at night.
The front seats are especially impressive. You get ergoActive Plus seats upholstered in premium leatherette, complete with ventilation and an eight-program massage function — features you’d normally expect in far more expensive luxury cars. A large panoramic sunroof further enhances the airy feel of the cabin.
Space is what you’d expect from a flagship 7-seater — generous in the first two rows, but that generosity ends at the third row. Its cramped and difficult to get in and out of as well. Best for very short durations and just enough for kids.
Practicality is a strong point too, with up to 1,905 litres of boot space when the second and third rows are folded flat, making it a genuine long-trip family SUV.
Loaded with Technology and Safety
Volkswagen has gone all out on features. The Tayron R-Line comes with a Harman Kardon sound system producing 700 watts through 11 speakers, an augmented reality head-up display projected on the windshield, three-zone climate control and dual wireless phone charging.
Parking large SUVs is made easy thanks to Park Assist Plus with a 360-degree camera system. But the camera resolution is bad for a car in this segment with a very grainy display. On the safety front, you get nine airbags — including a central airbag — along with comprehensive Level 2 ADAS that includes adaptive cruise control, lane assist and automated parking functions. This is easily one of the most tech-packed cabins in the segment.
Turbo Power Meets All-Wheel Drive
Now comes the part that truly sets the Tayron apart. Under the hood sits a 2.0-litre TSI EVO turbo-petrol engine producing a strong 201 BHP and 320 Nm of torque. Power is sent through a quick-shifting 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox and, crucially, Volkswagen’s 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system.
This alone puts the Tayron in a league of its own among family-focused 7-seaters in India, most of which rely on either front-wheel drive or comfort-oriented diesel engines. The EA888 motor feels lively and using launch control, yes this big family SUV has launch control too, the Tayron can do 100 kmph in under 7.5 seconds.
There is enough grunt for quick overtakes and one does not really need to downshift often with enough torque available on tap. Sport mode makes it sing a sonorous tone, and you really enjoy revving this engine. The Tayron can cruise at triple digit speeds happily and yet feel just as comfortable puttering around town. However we do wish the Tayron could have gotten the 2.0 TSI unit with the 265 BHP tune, which would have really made it not just king of the segment but also annihilate the premium luxury brands.
On the road, the Tayron feels planted and confidence-inspiring. At highway speeds, it remains rock solid, and through corners, the AWD system and well-tuned suspension keep body movements in check far better than you’d expect from a large SUV.
The ride quality though is on the stiffer side. It soaks up the rounded bumps well, but the sharper ones and the really protruding rumble strips test the suspension. It thuds and asks you to back off rather than just fly over them as you would do in a Fortuner. But that’s the price you pay for taking the corner at speeds where a Fortuner would end up on its side.
Verdict: Sporty Yet Sensible
So, is the Volkswagen Tayron R-Line India’s sportiest 7-seater SUV? With its 201-horsepower turbo-petrol engine, all-wheel drive setup, sharp R-Line styling and a cabin packed with premium tech, it offers a level of performance and sophistication most family SUVs simply don’t.
At the same time, it stays practical with three rows of seating, massive cargo space when needed, strong safety credentials and everyday comfort.
If Volkswagen manages competitive pricing and can stay well within the ₹50 lakh range, the Tayron could become the go-to option for buyers who want one SUV that does it all — thrills the driver during solo runs and comfortably carries the whole family on long trips. In many ways, it feels like the missing link between performance SUVs and traditional people movers — and that’s exactly what makes it so exciting.
