Ashok Leyland Brings Back TAURUS and HIPPO: Heavy-Duty Legends Return with Next-Gen Power

Ashok Leyland has officially reintroduced two of its most iconic heavy-duty nameplates—TAURUS and HIPPO—marking a major comeback for truck brands that have long been synonymous with rugged performance and reliability in India. Unveiled on 22nd January 2026, the new range is aimed at modern heavy-duty applications while retaining the legendary identity that made these trucks household names in the commercial vehicle world.

Revealed by Mr. Shenu Agarwal, Managing Director & CEO, Ashok Leyland, in the presence of senior leadership including Mr. Sanjeev Kumar (President – MHCV) and Ms. Madhavi Deshmukh (National Sales Head), the relaunch positions TAURUS as the brand’s high-horsepower tipper portfolio, while HIPPO anchors the tractor range.

Built on Ashok Leyland’s advanced AVTR modular truck platform, the new TAURUS and HIPPO aim to deliver higher productivity, improved uptime, superior fuel efficiency, and increased driver comfort—key factors that directly influence fleet profitability.

Powering both trucks is the brand’s 8.0-litre A-Series 6-cylinder engine, producing 360 HP and an impressive 1,600 Nm of torque, making it one of the strongest offerings in its segment. The trucks are engineered with heavy-duty drivetrains, reinforced chassis, improved cabin comfort, and enhanced durability for demanding sectors such as mining, construction, infrastructure development, bulk logistics, industrial material transport, and ODC operations.

Ashok Leyland says bookings and deliveries will begin through its dealership network across India, signalling a renewed focus on the fast-growing MHCV segments. With TAURUS and HIPPO, the company isn’t just bringing back old names—it’s upgrading legends for a new era of Indian logistics.
