Volkswagen all set to bring in its Fortuner rival, the Tayron R-Line

Volkswagen India is gearing up to enter the premium 7-seater SUV space with what it’s calling its upcoming flagship offering — the Volkswagen Tayron R-Line. The brand has officially revealed the design philosophy of the Tayron R-Line, giving us a clear first look at what could become VW’s most premium family SUV for India yet.

What makes this announcement even more exciting is the timing — Volkswagen is bringing the Tayron R-Line to India just 12 months after its European debut, underlining the company’s intent to introduce globally relevant products here without making India wait years for it.

A proper flagship 7-seater from Volkswagen

The Tayron R-Line is positioned as a full-size 7-seater SUV, and the R-Line badge means it won’t just be premium — it’ll also have that signature sporty touch Volkswagen reserves for its performance-inspired trims. According to Volkswagen, the Tayron represents a clear evolution of their global SUV design language, focused on strong proportions, sophistication, and that “premium German” appeal.

Design highlights: muscular, sharp and very ‘R-Line’

From the first look, it’s clear Volkswagen wants the Tayron to feel like a SUV with real road presence. The design is said to carry a muscular silhouette, complemented by illuminated light signatures and 19-inch Coventry alloy wheels that add to the premium stance. VW’s focus seems to be on making it look protective and confident on the outside, while keeping it calm and luxurious on the inside — exactly what buyers expect from a premium family SUV.

Interior: digital, wide and built around space

Step inside, and the Tayron R-Line takes the modern Volkswagen approach — minimal clutter, more digital controls, and a wide, airy cabin feel. VW mentions a horizontal dashboard layout to enhance the sense of width, while a large 15-inch floating infotainment screen, angled towards the driver, becomes the primary command centre.

Comfort and practicality: 7 seats done properly

Volkswagen is clearly pitching this SUV as a serious 7-seater, not a “5+2”. The Tayron R-Line runs on a long 2,789 mm wheelbase, which should translate into better legroom across all three rows.

And when it comes to comfort features, this is where it starts sounding very flagship:
The front seats get ergoActive Plus technology, along with Varenna leather upholstery, 10-point pressure massage, and active ventilation — features that put it right up there with the best in the segment.

For practicality, the Tayron will offer up to 850 litres of boot space with the third row folded, making it ready for airport runs, road trips and full-family duties. A large panoramic sunroof further adds to the airy feel, especially for rear passengers.

The Heart of the Tayron: TSI + AWD

Under the hood, the upcoming Volkswagen Tayron is expected to share its powertrain with the recently launched Tiguan R-Line, which means we could see the familiar 2.0-litre TSI turbo-petrol doing duty here as well. In the Tiguan R-Line, this motor puts out 201 bhp and 320 Nm, paired to Volkswagen’s slick 7-speed DSG automatic. More importantly, it comes with the brand’s 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system, which intelligently shifts power between the front and rear wheels depending on grip levels.

Rivals in India

Once launched, the Volkswagen Tayron R-Line will take on some of the most established names in the premium 7-seater SUV space, including the Toyota Fortuner, Skoda Kodiaq and the likes.
This is a space where buyers demand presence, comfort, safety, and strong road-trip ability — and from what Volkswagen has revealed so far, the Tayron looks ready to play that game.
