Tokyo E-Prix to Run as Night Race in 2026 Formula E Season

Formula E has confirmed that the 2026 Tokyo E-Prix will be held as a night race, marking the first time the all-electric championship will compete after dark on the streets of Japan.

The double-header event is scheduled for July 25 and 26, 2026, with both races set to start at 20:00 local time. The races will once again take place around the Tokyo Big Sight convention centre on the Tokyo Bay waterfront, but this time under artificial lighting.

Tokyo first joined the Formula E calendar in 2024, becoming the first FIA World Championship event to be staged on public roads in the Japanese capital. The 2025 edition expanded into a double-header format and delivered a landmark moment for the host nation, with the Nissan Formula E Team securing its first home victory. Oliver Rowland won Round 9 and later clinched the 2024/25 drivers’ title.

For 2026, the spotlight will fall on the GEN3 Evo race car, which continues as the series’ current technical platform. Organisers have stated that the event, including trackside lighting infrastructure, will be powered using sustainable energy sources, aligning with Tokyo’s broader climate targets, including net-zero CO₂ emissions by 2050.

The Tokyo round forms part of Formula E’s largest calendar to date. The 2025/26 season will feature 17 races across 11 cities, including São Paulo, Mexico City, Miami, Berlin, Monaco, Shanghai and London.

With its move to a night format, Tokyo becomes one of the few cities on the Formula E schedule to host racing under lights, adding a new visual dimension to the championship’s urban street-racing identity.
