Ola Shakti

Ola Electric, best known for its electric scooters, has just taken a major step beyond mobility. The company has entered India’s rapidly expanding Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) market with the launch of Ola Shakti, a home-grown residential energy storage solution.

Expanding from Mobility to Energy

The move marks Ola’s formal entry into India’s ₹1 lakh crore BESS segment, which is expected to triple in size by 2030. With this expansion, the company aims to scale its annual Gigafactory output for energy storage to 5 GWh, a figure that could soon surpass its battery consumption for vehicles.

The launch represents a broader shift for Ola from building EVs to helping households, farms, and small businesses manage power more efficiently. Simply put, Ola wants to do for home energy what it did for scooters: localize production and simplify access.

The First Fully Indigenous BESS

Built on Ola’s in-house 4680 Bharat Cell technology, Ola Shakti is being billed as India’s first fully designed, engineered, and manufactured residential BESS. It comes in four configurations — 1.5 kWh, 3 kWh, 5.2 kWh, and 9.1 kWh — priced between ₹29,999 and ₹1,59,999 for the initial batch of 10,000 units.

The system can power household essentials like refrigerators, air conditioners, and farm pumps, with charging times as low as two hours. Ola claims an efficiency of up to 98%, instant power backup with zero changeover delay, and weatherproof batteries tested for dust and rain.

Beyond performance specs, Ola Shakti is designed for everyday usability compact, stackable, and easy to install. Users can track and manage energy use through connected apps that offer real-time battery status, smart scheduling, and over-the-air software updates.

A Play for Energy Independence

Ola founder Bhavish Aggarwal framed the launch as a step toward “energy independence,” noting that India’s challenge isn’t generation but storage and smart usage. The company will leverage its existing Gigafactory and nationwide sales network to scale the new product without major additional investment.

Reservations for Ola Shakti open at ₹999, with deliveries beginning on Makar Sankranti 2026 through Ola’s website and retail stores.

If successful, Ola’s entry into home energy storage could make the company a key player not just in electric mobility but in the future of how India powers itself.
