Mahindra Vision S to take on the Tata Sierra
The new Tata Sierra has been in the news since its unveiling, and not without reason. The original Sierra may not have been a strong seller in its time, but it enjoys a cult following even today thanks to its iconic design. Two doors, alpine windows, a chunky stance and proper 4×4 capability — what wasn’t there to love?
The new Sierra, however, seems to have strayed far from that original brief. Much like the transformation of the Safari from a rugged, ladder-frame 4×4 into a monocoque soft-roader, the Sierra too has lost key elements of its identity. Four doors, no alpine windows and no 4×4 make it difficult to draw a clear connection with the original.
Mahindra, on the other hand, has consistently shown that it understands the value of heritage. Models like the Mahindra Thar and the Mahindra Scorpio-N prove that it’s possible to modernise a product without diluting its core character. And that philosophy is now set to challenge the Sierra head-on.
The Mahindra Vision S, showcased earlier this year, promises a back-to-basics SUV approach — upright proportions, strong road presence and the promise of genuine capability. When it arrives in production form around 2027, the Vision S is expected to offer fierce competition to the Tata Sierra, especially for buyers looking for an SUV that prioritises character, presence and authenticity over soft-road compromises. If Mahindra delivers on this promise, the Vision S could well emerge as the more convincing modern interpretation of a classic SUV ethos.
