Is Carlos Sainz the Luckiest Man on the Grid?

There’s hardly been a time when people haven’t rooted for Carlos Sainz. He might not be the most naturally gifted racer out there, but his charisma, work ethic, and loyalty to his team have always made him a fan favorite. So, when Ferrari dropped Sainz in 2024, the reaction across the paddock and among fans was one of shock and disappointment. But his replacement wasn’t just anyone — it was seven-time World Champion Sir Lewis Hamilton. Expectations were sky-high. Ferrari with Leclerc and Hamilton was supposed to be a dream team. Yet here we are, almost at the end of the 2025 Formula 1 season, and things haven’t exactly gone according to plan for the Scuderia.

The Points Game

Yes, Hamilton has scored 125 points this season — far ahead of Sainz’s 32 points. So, why call Sainz lucky?
Here’s the thing: Ferrari was expected to be fighting for wins with a well-balanced, competitive car. Instead, week after week, the Ferrari has proven unpredictable and difficult to drive. Meanwhile, Williams, who started the season at the back of the grid, have shown consistent progress under James Vowles’ leadership.
And here’s the kicker — Sainz managed to claim his first podium for Williams at the 2025 Azerbaijan GP, finishing third! Hamilton’s best result for Ferrari so far? Three fourth-place finishes — at Imola, Silverstone, and Austria.
So, in the bigger picture, maybe Sainz’s 32 points aren’t telling the full story.

Is It Game Over for Hamilton?

Not at all. If there’s one thing we know about Lewis Hamilton, it’s that he never gives up. Historically, he’s taken time to adjust — he struggled early at McLaren, then again when he joined Mercedes — and look how those stories turned out.
This is Hamilton’s first year at Ferrari, and yes, he’s struggling, but 2026 could be a completely different story. Once the team builds a car more suited to his driving style, don’t be surprised if we see Hamilton hammering through the field once again.

So, Is Sainz Actually Lucky?

Absolutely — at least for now.

Ever since James Vowles took over as team principal, Williams has undergone an incredible transformation. Vowles has openly said that Williams aims to be fighting for championships by 2027, and if his track record is anything to go by, that’s not just talk.

The team currently sits fifth in the Constructors’ Championship, steadily closing the gap to the front-runners. If this momentum continues, Williams could genuinely be back in contention within a couple of years — and when that happens, Carlos Sainz will be right there to enjoy the glory.
