BMW iX1 LWB – 600km Road Trip: Can a Luxury EV Be Your Only Car?
When you think of road trips, it’s not just about going from point A to B. It’s about the journey — the open roads, the pauses, and the memories along the way. But can all of this be experienced in an EV? We decided to find out with the BMW iX1 Long Wheelbase, on a 600km trip from Mumbai to Nashik.
The Setup
Fully charged with its 66.4kWh battery, the iX1 promised over 500km of range. Our plan was to drive in Eco mode, rely on regenerative braking, and see how close to “range anxiety-free” we could get. Tyres checked, playlist ready — we hit the road.
The Drive
The iX1 immediately impressed with its refinement. Its 204hp motor delivered power smoothly, making overtakes effortless and cruising serene. At 100–110 km/h, it felt planted and whisper-quiet, with road and wind noise reduced to a hush.
Comfort on the Move
This LWB version redefines comfort. Passengers enjoyed limo-like rear legroom, and the suspension flattened bad roads without fuss. Inside, the cabin felt lounge-like, with Harman Kardon audio and panoramic views through the glass roof. The adaptive regen and one-pedal mode made city exits and ghat sections equally effortless.
Charging Reality
A quick 30-minute stop at a 130kW fast charger took us from 10% to 80% — enough to continue stress-free. Planning is still necessary, but India’s fast-charging network is catching up quickly.
Verdict
By the time we reached Nashik, it was clear: the iX1 isn’t just a luxury EV. It’s a capable long-distance cruiser that can double as your only car, combining BMW comfort with EV efficiency. Touring in an EV? Absolutely possible.
